Hastings 2000/2006
In 1066 AD one of the most significant battles in history took place in southern England.  Today the location is simply called the town of  "Battle."  A French/Norman invasion by William the Conqueror was successful in defeating the Saxon army of King Harold Godwinson.

When ever the date of the battle (Oct. 14th) falls on the day of the battle - Saturday - a re-enactment of the battle takes place.  It is simply called "The Big One."  Re-enactors come from all over the world to participate.  The organizing host of the event is "The Vikings" and the event is a benefit for "English Heritage" the organization who maintains historical sites across England.  Authenticity standards are the highest.  All equipment/"kit" has to be authentic in appearance and materials.  Fighting standards are also enforced.  Due to the potential danger of the re-enactment all  participants are required to pass safety and combat tests.   These major events attract thousands of visitors and many TV, movie and other members of the media.
My good friend and fellow re-enactor Henrik, at Hastings 2006 as part of the Norman Cavalry.  Look for his green shield in the video below!

I took this photo backed into the bushes showing what it looked like to be in front of a Norman Cavalry charge.
There I am in the Saxon line as one of King Harold's Huscarles
My lovely wife reads the newspaper to me the morning of the battle.  Somehow the newspaper  already had the story of us being defeated!  I don't know how that could be. As a Saxon Noble I  don't trust reading anyway.
Ed and Brian, my good buddies who spent all day shooting arrows at me!

I saw this sign outside one of the many pubs in the town of Battle, where the Battle of Hastings took place.  After the battle every restaurant and pub within miles was full of re-enactors from all over the world.  With 22,000 spectators and over 2,000 re-enactors, the little town Battle was very lively!

The future of the Saxon Army and the only people who were having as much fun as I was!

English Heritage produced this excellent video of the Battle Re-enactment in 2006.  It is available on YouTube.  If you click on YouTube below you should find it.
